Genuine vs Fake Gemstone Bracelets — How to Verify
Genuine vs Fake Gemstone Bracelets
How to verify what you're buying
Gemstone jewelry is one of the easiest product categories to fake — glass, dyed quartz, and heat-treated stones are common substitutes sold as natural. Here's how to tell the difference before and after you buy.
Before you buy
- Ask for the lab certificate upfront — not after you've already paid
- Be cautious of prices that seem far below market rate for the stone type — natural AAA-grade stones have a real cost floor
- Check whether the seller specifies the stone's grade (AAA, AA, etc.) or just calls it "natural" with no detail
After you receive it
- Look for inclusions. Natural stones have minor internal imperfections. Perfectly clear, flawless beads are usually glass or synthetic.
- Check the weight. Natural stones typically feel heavier than glass of the same size.
- Touch test. Natural stones feel cool initially and warm slowly; glass and plastic warm up almost instantly.
- Match the certificate. The lab certificate should describe the specific stone, its origin, and treatment status — cross-check it against what you received.
