Mars (Mangal) Gemstones: The Complete Jyotish Guide
In jyotish the nine grahas each carry a stone, worn to strengthen that planet’s significations in a chart. This guide covers Mars — what it governs, its primary ratna, the accepted substitutes, and the conventions around wearing them. It is one of a series covering all nine.
What Mars signifies
| Sanskrit | Mangal, Kuja, Angaraka |
| Governs | Energy, courage, siblings, land, conflict, surgery |
| Rules | Mesh (Aries) and Vrishchik (Scorpio) |
| Exalted in | Makar (Capricorn) |
| Debilitated in | Kark (Cancer) |
| Day | Tuesday |
| Direction | South |
| Colours | Red, coral, deep orange |
| Nakshatras | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| Primary stone | Moonga (Red Coral) |
Moonga (Red Coral): the primary ratna
| Metal | Gold or copper |
| Finger | Ring finger |
| Day to first wear | Tuesday |
| Who traditionally wears it | Mesh and Vrishchik; also Simha and Dhanu |
Mars is the graha behind Mangal Dosha, and Moonga is its principal remedy stone — worn on a reading, since remedies for an afflicted Mars differ from remedies for a merely weak one.
The substitutes (upratna)
Classical practice accepts substitute stones where the primary ratna is out of reach; they are traditionally worn in greater carat weight than the primary would be. The semi-precious options carry no restriction at all and sit at ₹700–₹900.
| Stone | Traditionally worn for |
|---|---|
| Red Garnet | Vitality and steady effort; the affordable option |
| Carnelian | Drive and confidence |
| Red Jasper | Endurance rather than flare |

What is traditionally avoided
This is the part general crystal guides leave out, and in jyotish it matters as much as the recommendation. Mars stones are traditionally not worn alongside Neelam (Saturn), Panna (Mercury) and Heera (Venus) — those grahas being held inimical to it. It pairs conventionally with Manik (Sun), Moti (Moon) and Pukhraj (Jupiter).
These combination rules attach to certified jyotish ratna worn on astrological advice. They do not apply to semi-precious stones worn as ordinary crystals.
The Mars mantra
Traditionally chanted 108 times on a Tuesday, facing south:
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone wear Moonga (Red Coral)?
It is a navratna, and traditional practice is to wear it on astrological advice rather than by default. The semi-precious substitutes above carry no such restriction.
Which finger and metal?
Ring finger, in gold or copper, first worn on a Tuesday.
What if Mars is debilitated in my chart?
That is exactly the case where classical practice says to consult before buying — remedies for a debilitated graha are not always the same as remedies for a weak one. See our consultation page.
Can women wear it?
Yes. There is no traditional gender restriction on any of the navratna.
