Sun (Surya) Gemstones: The Complete Jyotish Guide
In jyotish the nine grahas each carry a stone, and the stone is worn to strengthen that planet’s significations in a chart. Surya — the Sun — is the first of them.

The core idea is straightforward: Surya is the planet of standing. Where the Sun is strong, a person is traditionally said to be seen. Where it is weak, the classical texts speak of capable people going unrecognised.
Manik (Ruby): the primary ratna
Ruby is corundum — the same mineral as sapphire, coloured red by chromium. It is hard, rare and genuinely expensive in certified natural form.

The substitutes (upratna)
Classical practice accepts substitute stones where the primary ratna is out of reach. They are traditionally worn in larger carat weight than the primary would be.

Who traditionally wears a Surya stone
Classical practice recommends it where the Sun rules a favourable house for the ascendant, or where recognition is the stated concern. In everyday retail terms, people come to Surya stones for:
- Work that requires being visible — leading, presenting, selling
- Government and public-sector aspirations, since Surya governs position and office — see government job
- Difficulty with authority figures, or with a father
- Being competent but overlooked, which is the classical description of a weak but unafflicted Sun
What is traditionally avoided
This is the part general crystal guides leave out, and in jyotish it matters more than the recommendation.
Surya stones are traditionally not worn together with stones of Shani, Shukra or Rahu — that is, Neelam (Saturn), diamond (Venus) and Gomed (Rahu). Those planets are held to be inimical to the Sun, and the classical texts advise against combining their stones.
Manik pairs conventionally with Pukhraj (Jupiter), Moonga (Mars) and Moti (Moon) — the three friendly grahas.

The Surya mantra
Traditionally chanted 108 times on a Sunday, facing east, at sunrise:
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः
Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah
Surya Namaskar and the offering of water at sunrise (arghya) are the more common household observances, and neither requires a stone.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone wear a ruby?
Ruby is a navratna and traditional practice is to wear it on astrological advice rather than by default — particularly where the Sun is badly placed. It does not carry the same strong caution as Neelam, but it is not a casual purchase either. Semi-precious substitutes carry no such restriction.
Which finger for a Surya stone?
The ring finger, in gold or copper, first worn on a Sunday.
Is sunstone a real Surya stone?
It is not one of the classical navratna or their formal upratna, but it is widely worn for the Sun association in modern practice and is genuinely affordable.
What if my Sun is debilitated?
