Kemadruma Dosha: The Lonely Moon & Its Remedies
Two things before anything else, because the honest version of this term is narrower than the version sold online. First, Kemadruma Dosha is read from a birth chart, not inferred from misfortune — a run of difficulty is not a diagnosis. Second, the traditional remedies are observances, not purchases. A stone supports the afflicted graha; it does not resolve the yoga.
What it is
Kemadruma Yoga forms when no planet occupies the houses immediately either side of the Moon — the second and twelfth from it — and no planet aspects or conjoins it. The Moon is left, in the classical phrase, without support.
How it is identified in a chart
| Indicator | What is looked at |
|---|---|
| The Moon with empty 2nd and 12th houses from itself | The core condition |
| No planetary aspect on the Moon | Aspects cancel the yoga in most schools |
| No conjunction with the Moon | Including with Rahu or Ketu in some traditions |
| Cancellation (bhanga) | Widely accepted — a strong Moon, benefic aspect, or planets in kendras from the Moon or Lagna nullifies it. Most charts said to carry it are cancelled. |
This requires a chart — not a birth date, not a rashi, but the full chart with time and place. Anyone offering to identify it from your name or date alone is not reading it. Our consultation page exists for this.
What it is traditionally said to mean
The classical description is of emotional isolation and effort that does not translate into support — a sense of doing it alone. It is a Moon affliction, so it is read against the mind and the mother, not against fortune generally.
What it does not mean
This section matters more than the rest, because the term is used to sell a great deal.
- It is not a curse, and it is not a prediction of poverty — a claim made often and supported nowhere in the classical texts.
- It is very frequently cancelled. Any competent reading checks for bhanga first, and most charts flagged with Kemadruma online have it.
- It is not diagnosable from a birth date. It needs the full chart.
The traditional remedies
All of these are observances. None of them requires anything from us.
- Monday observances. Somvar vrat, and the Chandra mantra.
- Offering water and rice, traditionally on Mondays and on Purnima.
- Caring for the mother, or for elderly women — the Moon’s karaka.
- Donating white items — rice, milk, white cloth, silver — on a Monday.
- Keeping company deliberately. The most practical remedy for a yoga about isolation, and the one classical commentators emphasise most.
The mantra
Traditionally chanted 108 times on a Monday:
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah
Where a stone fits — and where it does not
Honestly: a gemstone is not the remedy. The observances are. Stones strengthen the graha involved and are worn alongside them, never instead. Where an astrologer has advised strengthening Chandra (Moon), these are the relevant stones.
| Stone | Note |
|---|---|
| Moti (Pearl) | The Moon navratna — on a reading only |
| Moonstone | The accessible Moon stone; no restriction |
| Selenite | Clearing; the lunar association |
| Rose Quartz | Gentleness, including toward oneself |
Browse the Kemadruma Dosha collection. We would rather you performed the observance and bought nothing than the reverse.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have Kemadruma Dosha?
A qualified astrologer reads it from your full birth chart. It cannot be established from your name, your birth date alone, or from events in your life.
Can it be removed permanently?
Classical practice treats the remedies as ongoing observance rather than a one-time cure.
Which stone is best for it?
There is no single stone, and the question slightly misframes the tradition. Stones support the afflicted graha; the observances are the remedy.
Should I be worried?
Doshas are configurations, not verdicts. Many are cancelled by other factors in the same chart, and a competent reading checks for that before recommending anything.
