Tanzanite Benefits, Who Can Wear It & Price
Tanzanite is found in exactly one place on earth — a few square kilometres near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania — and was discovered only in 1967. It is the newest stone in common use, which means it has no classical Vedic association at all. Anything claiming otherwise is invented.

What it is traditionally worn for
- Pleochroism. Its defining property: tanzanite shows different colours from different angles — blue, violet and burgundy from the same stone. No other blue stone does this so strongly.
- A modern Saturn stone. Indian sellers commonly treat it as a Neelam alternative on colour grounds. That is a modern convention, not a classical one — worth knowing before you buy it as a substitute.
- Genuinely finite. A single deposit, actively depleting. Its scarcity is real rather than marketed.
The varieties
| Type | Note |
|---|---|
| Blue-dominant | The most valued |
| Violet-dominant | More common, less expensive |
| Heat-treated | Near-universal — almost all tanzanite is heated to bring out blue |

Real vs fake
Blue glass, synthetic forsterite and coated quartz. The pleochroism test is decisive: turn the stone under a single light and look for the colour shift. Glass shows one colour from every angle. Also note that virtually all tanzanite is heat-treated — standard, and it should be disclosed.
Every MantraMani order ships with a report from an independent, government-approved, ISO 9001:2015 certified gemmological laboratory. If a stone is ever not what we said it was, the 10X guarantee applies — prove it through an independent NABL-accredited laboratory within 30 days and we refund ten times what you paid.
How to wear and care for it
Softer than sapphire and it cleaves. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, sudden temperature change, and wearing it for manual work.
The left-versus-right convention is set out in how to wear a pyrite bracelet, and the safe cleansing methods for each stone are in how to cleanse and charge crystals.
