Gemstone Rings: Which Finger, Which Metal, Which Day

A ring is the traditional form for a jyotish ratna, and it is the one where the instructions are most specific. Bracelets and pendants are comparatively free; a ring worn for astrological reasons has a finger, a metal and a day attached to it.

Traditionally worn on the right hand for men and the left for women, though practice varies and many practitioners use the right for both.

Why the stone must touch the skin

This is the one construction detail that matters and the one most often got wrong. A jyotish ring is traditionally made with an open back, so the base of the stone rests against the finger. A fully closed bezel — standard in ordinary jewellery — is considered to defeat the purpose.

If you are having a stone set, say so to the jeweller. Most will default to a closed setting because it is stronger.

What panchdhatu is

Panchdhatu is the five-metal alloy — gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron in varying proportions — used where a stone suits more than one metal or where gold is impractical. It is the standard choice for Shani, Rahu and Ketu stones. See which metal for your gemstone.

Carat weight

The traditional rule of thumb sizes the stone to body weight rather than to taste. That has its own guide: carat weight by body weight.

When a ring is the wrong form

  • Soft stones. Fluorite, selenite, malachite and turquoise all scratch and chip on a hand. Wear them as a pendant instead.
  • Manual work. A ring takes more abuse than any other form of jewellery.
  • Semi-precious crystals generally. If the stone is not a jyotish ratna, none of the finger-and-metal rules apply and a bracelet is easier to live with.

Our ring range runs from ₹1,199 to ₹2,199 for semi-precious stones in silver.

Frequently asked questions

Which finger for Pukhraj?

The index finger, in gold, first worn on a Thursday morning.

Right hand or left?

Traditionally right for men, left for women. Many practitioners use the right for both; follow the instruction you were given.

Can I wear more than one jyotish ring?

Yes, but the combination rules matter — stones of inimical grahas are traditionally not worn together. Each planet guide on this blog lists which.

Does the ring have to be new?

Traditional practice prefers a stone that has not been worn by someone else. If it has, cleanse it thoroughly first.
