Which Metal for Your Gemstone: Gold, Silver or Panchdhatu
In jyotish the metal is not decoration — it is part of the prescription, and it changes with the graha. This is one of the questions where Indian practice is unusually consistent across schools.
The table
| Graha | Stone | Metal | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surya (Sun) | Manik | Gold, or copper | Both solar metals |
| Chandra (Moon) | Moti | Silver | The lunar metal; near-universal |
| Mangal (Mars) | Moonga | Gold or copper | Copper is Mars’s own metal |
| Budh (Mercury) | Panna | Gold or silver | Either is accepted |
| Guru (Jupiter) | Pukhraj | Gold | Jupiter’s metal; rarely substituted |
| Shukra (Venus) | Heera | Silver, platinum or white gold | White metals |
| Shani (Saturn) | Neelam | Silver or panchdhatu | Iron is Shani’s metal but is not set |
| Rahu | Gomed | Silver or panchdhatu | Shadow graha; the mixed metal suits |
| Ketu | Lehsunia | Silver or panchdhatu | As Rahu |
What panchdhatu is
Pancha five, dhatu metal — an alloy of gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron in varying proportions. It exists precisely for the cases where a stone suits more than one graha’s metal, or where the prescribed metal is impractical or unaffordable.
It is the standard choice for the Saturn, Rahu and Ketu stones, and it is genuinely traditional rather than a modern compromise. Ashtadhatu — eight metals — also exists and is used mainly for idols and yantras.
The one rule almost everyone in India follows
Gold above the waist, silver below. Gold is associated with Surya and the upper body, and wearing it on the feet is traditionally avoided as disrespectful. This is why payals and toe rings are silver regardless of what a household can afford — see the anklet guide.
Crystals sit outside the rule; they are neither metal.
When the metal does not matter
For semi-precious crystals worn as ordinary stones — amethyst, tiger eye, rose quartz, agate and the rest — there is no prescription at all. Elastic, cord, silver, steel: choose on durability and taste. The metal rules attach to certified jyotish ratna worn on astrological advice.
Practical notes
- Silver tarnishes. Expected; polish it. Do not use a dip cleaner on porous stones.
- Copper marks the skin green. Harmless, and traditional wearers regard it as normal.
- Open-backed settings are traditionally preferred for jyotish rings so the stone touches the skin. See gemstone rings.
- Nickel allergies are common in cheap alloys; ask what a “silver-plated” piece is plated over.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set Pukhraj in silver?
Gold is the traditional prescription. Panchdhatu is the usual compromise where gold is not possible.
Is panchdhatu as good as gold?
It is a traditional and accepted alternative, not a second-best invention.
Does the metal matter for a bracelet?
Not for semi-precious stones. Only for certified ratna.
Why is silver used for Saturn when iron is Shani’s metal?
Iron rusts against skin and is impractical for a setting. Panchdhatu contains iron, which is one reason it is the preferred Shani alloy.
