Earth Signs: Shared Traits & the Stones They Wear
Three rashis carry the earth element. They sit 120 degrees apart, forming a trine — which is why classical texts treat them as natural allies.
One clarification first, because it decides whether this applies to you. In Vedic astrology your rashi is your moon sign, not your sun sign. Western columns use the sun, and the two systems frequently disagree. Work yours out with the Gemstone Finder.
The three earth signs
| Rashi | Ruler | Mode | Stone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Shukra / Venus | Fixed | Heera (Diamond) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Budh / Mercury | Mutable | Panna (Emerald) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Shani / Saturn | Cardinal | Neelam (Blue Sapphire) |
What earth signs share
- They build. Earth signs are traditionally read as producing things that last.
- They are practical. The test applied is always whether it works.
- They are patient. Willing to wait far longer than fire for a result.
- They are reliable. The signs most associated with keeping their word.
- They value security — material, and otherwise.
And what they share as difficulty
The costs are the same traits inverted: stubbornness, resistance to change, over-caution, and a tendency to measure worth in what can be counted. Fixed Vrishabh digs in hardest; mutable Kanya worries most.
The stones
The classical ratna
Each sign takes its ruler’s stone, listed in the table above. All are navratna, all are certified purchases, and traditional practice is to wear them on a chart reading rather than by sign alone. Neelam in particular is the one stone traditionally never worn without one.
The accessible stones
These carry no restriction and are where most people start. Most sit at ₹700–₹900.
| Stone | Traditionally worn for |
|---|---|
| Green Aventurine | Steady growth — the earth-sign default |
| Jade | Patient abundance rather than sudden gain |
| Moss Agate | Grounding with growth |
| Rose Quartz | For Vrishabh and Tula, both Venus-ruled |

The counterweight — the part usually left out
Where the difficulty is rigidity rather than instability — and with earth signs it usually is — traditional practice reaches for a loosening stone rather than more earth: citrine for movement, labradorite for change, or carnelian for impetus.
Compatibility
Classical compatibility puts earth easiest with water, which softens it, and hardest with fire, which finds it slow. Air is workable but frustrating in both directions.
As always, sign-to-sign compatibility is a sketch. A real reading uses both full charts.
The other elements
| Fire | Mesh, Simha, Dhanu — action |
| Earth | Vrishabh, Kanya, Makar — substance |
| Air | Mithun, Tula, Kumbh — thought |
| Water | Kark, Vrishchik, Meen — feeling |
Frequently asked questions
Am I earth?
In Vedic terms, only if your moon sits in one of the three signs above. Your Western sun sign is a different calculation and frequently a different sign.
Can I wear a stone for a sign that is not mine?
The semi-precious ones, yes — they carry no restriction. The navratna are the ones worn on advice.
Which stone suits all three?
The first entry in the accessible table above, if you want to go with the element — or the counterweight, if the difficulty is excess rather than lack.
