Agate Benefits: Types, Meaning & How to Wear
Agate is not one stone but a family, defined by its banding. Every variety is chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — and the differences are colour and pattern rather than species. In Indian practice the black-and-white banded variety, Sulemani hakik, is the best known and is worn for protection.
Agate: quick facts

What it is traditionally worn for
- Steadiness over intensity. Agate is traditionally the stone of consistency rather than transformation — worn for the long stretch, not the crisis.
- Protection. Sulemani hakik in particular is one of the standard Indian nazar stones, alongside black tourmaline.
- Grounding. A root-chakra stone in most correspondences; see the root chakra guide.

Real vs fake
Dyed agate is extremely common and largely accepted in the trade — the bright blues, purples and greens on the market are almost all dyed. That is not fraud when disclosed. What to watch for is dye sold as natural at natural prices, and glass with painted banding. Real agate banding runs through the stone; painted banding stops at the surface.
Every MantraMani order ships with a report from an independent, government-approved, ISO 9001:2015 certified gemmological laboratory. If a stone is ever not what we said it was, the 10X guarantee applies — prove it through an independent NABL-accredited laboratory within 30 days and we refund ten times what you paid.
How to wear and care for it
Hard and durable. Tolerates water. Dyed varieties fade in strong sun.
The left-versus-right convention is set out in how to wear a pyrite bracelet, and the safe cleansing methods for each stone are in how to cleanse and charge crystals.
