Mercury (Budh) Gemstones: The Complete Jyotish Guide
In jyotish the nine grahas each carry a stone, worn to strengthen that planet’s significations in a chart. This guide covers Mercury — what it governs, its primary ratna, the accepted substitutes, and the conventions around wearing them. It is one of a series covering all nine.

The substitutes (upratna)
Classical practice accepts substitute stones where the primary ratna is out of reach; they are traditionally worn in greater carat weight than the primary would be. The semi-precious options carry no restriction at all and sit at ₹700–₹900.
| Stone | Traditionally worn for |
|---|---|
| Green Aventurine | The everyday Mercury green |
| Jade | Steady growth; the patient version |
| Sodalite | Clear thinking and orderly speech |
| Peridot | A traditional Mercury upratna |

What is traditionally avoided
This is the part general crystal guides leave out, and in jyotish it matters as much as the recommendation. Mercury stones are traditionally not worn alongside Moti (Moon) and Moonga (Mars) — those grahas being held inimical to it. It pairs conventionally with Heera (Venus), Neelam (Saturn) and Gomed (Rahu).
These combination rules attach to certified jyotish ratna worn on astrological advice. They do not apply to semi-precious stones worn as ordinary crystals.
The Mercury mantra
Traditionally chanted 108 times on a Wednesday, facing north:
ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः
Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone wear Panna (Emerald)?
It is a navratna, and traditional practice is to wear it on astrological advice rather than by default. The semi-precious substitutes above carry no such restriction.
Which finger and metal?
Little finger, in gold or silver, first worn on a Wednesday.
What if Mercury is debilitated in my chart?
That is exactly the case where classical practice says to consult before buying — remedies for a debilitated graha are not always the same as remedies for a weak one. See our consultation page.
Can women wear it?
Yes. There is no traditional gender restriction on any of the navratna.
