Mulank 4: Your Gemstone by Numerology Ruling Number
Mulank — the root number — is the base of ank jyotish, Indian numerology. It needs nothing but your date of birth, which makes it the most accessible of the traditional systems. This guide covers Mulank 4; it is one of a series of nine.
How to calculate your mulank
Add the digits of your birth date only — the day of the month, not the month or the year — and reduce to a single digit. If you were born on the 4, 13, 22, 31 of any month, your mulank is 4.
Mulank is not your rashi. Rashi is your moon sign and needs birth date, time and place; mulank needs only the date. Neither replaces the other, and where the two disagree traditional practice gives precedence to the chart. Work your rashi out with the Gemstone Finder, or use our numerology calculator for the number.

What Mulank 4 traditionally signifies
Traditional strengths
- Unconventional thinking. Four sees the route nobody else considered.
- Systems. Genuinely good with structure, process and detail.
- Endurance under odd conditions. Rahu numbers are traditionally read as resilient.
- Independence. Comfortable outside the consensus.
The traditional difficulties
Every number in ank jyotish carries a cost, and listing only the strengths would be flattery rather than the tradition:
- Restlessness. Rahu is the unsettled graha and 4 carries it.
- Sudden reversals. Traditionally described as abrupt rather than gradual.
- Friction with authority. Four resists being told.
- Isolation. Independence hardening into distance.
The stones for Mulank 4
Because Rahu rules the number, the stones are that graha’s stones.
The primary ratna
Gomed (Hessonite) — a certified navratna, traditionally worn after a chart reading rather than by number alone.
The accessible stones
These carry no traditional restriction and are where most people start. Most sit at ₹700–₹900.
| Stone | Traditionally worn for |
|---|---|
| Black Tourmaline | Protection; the common Rahu-adjacent choice |
| Hematite | Grounding against Rahu restlessness |
| Agate | Steadying; traditionally worn for consistency |

A counterweight worth knowing
Gomed is a serious navratna and traditional practice is emphatic that Rahu stones are worn only after a chart reading — more so than for most grahas. Where no reading exists, the grounding stones above carry no such caution.
How to wear
- Day: traditionally first worn on a Saturday.
- Hand: left to receive, right to project — the convention is set out in how to wear a pyrite bracelet.
- Care: see how to cleanse and charge crystals — several of these stones must be kept dry.
Frequently asked questions
Is mulank the same as my rashi?
No. Mulank comes from your birth date alone and belongs to ank jyotish. Rashi is your moon sign and needs date, time and place.
What if my mulank and rashi stones conflict?
Traditional practice gives precedence to the chart. Mulank is the simpler system and is treated as supplementary where the two disagree.
What is bhagyank?
The destiny number, from the full date of birth — day, month and year reduced to a single digit. Mulank describes disposition; bhagyank is read as the arc of a life.
Is 4 a lucky number?
Ank jyotish does not grade numbers as lucky or unlucky. Each carries strengths and difficulties, and the remedies address the difficulties.
