Pitru Paksha 2026 (26 Sep–10 Oct): Should You Buy Gemstones?

Pitru Paksha 2026 runs from Saturday 26 September to Saturday 10 October — fifteen days set aside for the ancestors, closing with Mahalaya Amavasya on the 10th.

We sell gemstones, so let us give the honest answer to the question in the title first: traditionally, no. Jewellery, gold and auspicious items are customarily not bought during Pitru Paksha. If you are planning a purchase, wait for Navratri on 11 October. We would rather say that plainly than take an order two weeks early.

Pitru Paksha 2026: the dates

BeginsSaturday, 26 September 2026
EndsSaturday, 10 October 2026 — Mahalaya Amavasya
DurationFifteen days
Also calledPitri Paksha, Shraddha Paksha, Kanagat, Sola Shraddha
Immediately followed byNavratri, Sunday 11 October

The tithi on which a particular ancestor is remembered corresponds to the tithi of their passing, so the specific shraddha day differs household to household. Mahalaya Amavasya on 10 October is the collective day, observed for all ancestors and for any whose date is unknown.

What the fifteen days are for

Pitru Paksha is directed to the pitrs — the ancestors — and the observances are tarpan (water offerings), shraddha (the rite itself), and pind daan. The character of the period is remembrance and obligation rather than celebration, and that is the whole reason for the buying restriction.

It is not that the days are unlucky. It is that they are given over to something else. Auspicious beginnings — a new house, a wedding, a vehicle, jewellery, a new business — are traditionally held back so the period keeps its character.

What is traditionally avoided

  • Buying gold, silver and gemstones
  • New clothes and new vehicles
  • Weddings, engagements, griha pravesh
  • Starting a new business or venture
  • In many households: non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and cutting hair or nails

What is not restricted

The restriction is narrower than it is often presented, and worth stating precisely:

  • Wearing what you already own. There is no tradition of removing gemstones you already wear. If you wear a rashi ratna daily, keep wearing it.
  • Items for the shraddha itself. What is needed for the rites is bought as required.
  • Necessities. The restriction is on auspicious and celebratory purchases, not on groceries or medicine.
  • Remedies for Pitra Dosha. This is the genuine exception, and it points the other way — see below.

The one exception: Pitra Dosha

Pitru Paksha is the most traditional time to address Pitra Dosha — the affliction held to arise when ancestral obligations are unmet. Where a chart shows it, the remedies are performed precisely during these fifteen days.

The remedies themselves are rites, not purchases: tarpan, shraddha at a recognised site, feeding brahmins and the poor, and offerings to crows and cows. A gemstone is not the primary remedy for Pitra Dosha and anyone selling you one as such is inverting the tradition. See Pitra Dosha: remedies, stones and what it means.

If you are shopping, here is the sensible plan

Do the research now, place the order later. Certified stones take time to source, and buying under time pressure on a festival day is exactly how people end up with undisclosed treatments.

A note on regional variation

Observance differs. In Bengal the period closes with Mahalaya, which is also the dawn of Durga Puja and is marked as a beginning as much as an ending. In parts of South India the restrictions are lighter; in parts of the north they are stricter. Some families observe only the specific tithi of their own ancestors rather than all fifteen days.

Follow what your family follows. That instruction is itself the tradition, and it outranks any general article — including this one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear my existing gemstones during Pitru Paksha?

Yes. There is no tradition of removing what you already wear.

Can I place an order that will be delivered after 10 October?

Households differ. Some treat the transaction as the act, others the receipt. The straightforward course is to wait — there is no advantage to ordering early, and Navratri is only days later.

Can I buy a gift for someone during Pitru Paksha?

The restriction applies to the household observing it. If neither you nor the recipient is observing, it does not arise. If either is, wait.

Is Pitru Paksha inauspicious?

Not in itself. It is a period of remembrance and obligation. Calling it unlucky misreads it — the tradition treats it as a duty that is honoured, not a danger to be survived.

What if I already bought something?

Nothing is spoiled. This is a matter of custom, not of harm. Keep it, and begin wearing it after Mahalaya if you would prefer.

When exactly does buying reopen?

With Navratri on Sunday 11 October 2026, the day after Mahalaya Amavasya.
