Crystal Pendants: Why Proximity to the Heart Is the Tradition
A pendant sits at the chest or the throat, and in every tradition that maps the body those are specific places rather than convenient ones. That is the whole argument for the form.
Position is the point
| Where it sits | Centre | Stones |
|---|---|---|
| The hollow of the throat | Vishuddha | Lapis lazuli, turquoise, sodalite, chalcedony |
| The centre of the chest | Anahata | Rose quartz, green aventurine, jade, kunzite |
| Below the sternum | Manipura | Citrine, tiger eye, pyrite |
Which is why chain length is not only a styling decision — a short chain puts the stone at the throat, a long one at the heart, and the traditional associations differ.
Which stones suit a pendant better than a bracelet
- Soft stones. Fluorite at hardness 4, selenite at 2, malachite and turquoise all take a beating on a wrist. Hanging at the chest they are barely touched.
- Single large pieces. A raw point or a slice shows better than it would as beads.
- Anything worn under clothing. A pendant is discreet where a bracelet is not — useful in workplaces with jewellery rules.

Jyotish pendants
A certified navratna is traditionally worn as a ring, on a prescribed finger in a prescribed metal — see gemstone rings. Where a ring is impractical, a pendant is the accepted alternative, and the same rule applies: the stone should touch the skin, so an open-backed setting is preferred.
Care
- Take it off before a shower. Soap dulls porous stones and corrodes silver chains.
- Perfume last, pendant after. Alcohol attacks turquoise, pearl, opal and malachite.
- Store flat. Chains knot; soft stones scratch against harder ones in a box.
- Check the bail. The loop is where pendants fail, not the stone.

Frequently asked questions
Does chain length matter?
Traditionally yes — it decides whether the stone sits at the throat or the heart, which are different centres.
Should the stone touch my skin?
For a jyotish ratna, traditional practice says yes and prefers an open-backed setting. For semi-precious crystals it is not required.
Can I wear a pendant and a bracelet of the same stone?
Yes. There is no restriction on semi-precious stones.
Silver or gold chain?
For semi-precious stones, whichever you prefer. For jyotish ratna the metal is prescribed — see which metal for your gemstone.
