Diwali 2026 Crystals: Lakshmi, the Five Days & Where to Place Them
Diwali 2026 falls on Monday, 9 November. In Bengal the same night is Kali Puja. It is the third of the five days, and by far the most common day for Lakshmi Puja in the home.
This guide covers the five days in order, which crystals are traditionally kept out during the festival, and — the part most guides skip — where in the house they actually go.

Which crystals are traditionally kept for Lakshmi Puja
Four come up consistently. None of them replaces the puja — they are placed alongside it.
- Pyrite. The standard Diwali stone in Indian practice, and the one most associated with Lakshmi in modern usage. Usually kept as a pyramid or a tree rather than worn. See pyrite benefits.

Where they are placed: the Vastu directions
This is the practical half, and it is worth getting right because these objects are placed once and then left.

Two conventions worth knowing. Wealth pieces are traditionally kept off the floor — on a shelf, table or altar. And the north-east is kept uncluttered; it is the one direction where the tradition is to place less rather than more.
A simple five-day sequence
- Before Dhanteras (7 Nov): decide what you are buying. Certified stones take time to source and buying under pressure on the day is how undisclosed treatments get through.
- Dhanteras (7 Nov): the purchase itself. Rinse in clean water when it arrives home.
- Chhoti Diwali (8 Nov): the clearing day — the traditional time to clean existing crystals as well as the house. Dry methods for hematite and pyrite, which both rust.
- Diwali (9 Nov): place everything in its direction before the lamps are lit. Wealth pieces go out on this night and stay out.

Frequently asked questions
Do crystals replace the Lakshmi Puja?
No, and nobody in the tradition treats them that way. They are placed alongside the puja, in the same spirit as the vessels and lamps.
Should I buy on Dhanteras or on Diwali itself?
Dhanteras is the traditional buying day. Diwali is the day things are placed and lit. Buying early and placing on the ninth is the usual pattern.
Can I keep a pyrite pyramid in the bedroom?
It is traditionally kept where money is handled or in the north of the home, rather than in a bedroom. The convention for bedrooms is calming stones — amethyst or rose quartz.
What do I do with last year’s crystals?
Clean and keep them. Crystals are not immersed or replaced annually the way clay idols are.
Is it inauspicious to buy crystals before Diwali?
Not at all — except during Pitru Paksha, 26 September to 10 October 2026, when jewellery and auspicious items are traditionally not bought. The window reopens with Navratri on 11 October.
